Celebrate the month of August with Peridots!

Peridot name is derived from an Arabic Word “Feridat” meaning Gem. Peridot is a gemstone from the Olivine mineral family that is composed of magnesium-iron silicates.

Color: Peridot is one of the few gemstones that exist only in one color, olive green. The intensity and hue of the green color depend on the percentage of the iron content. The color ranges from bright yellowish green to brownish green. The most desirable shade of Peridot does not include the brown tone. It is sometimes called evening emerald for its light green color.

Clarity: Most fine Peridots are eye clean. They do include tiny black inclusions but those are only visible under magnification.

Cut: Peridots can be cut in different shapes including emerald, oval, and cushions.

Carat Weight: Peridot is relatively not so expensive gemstone under 4 carat weight. Over 10 carat weight is very rare to find so it increases the value as well.

Peridot is the birthstone for August.  It is believed to instill power and influence in the wearer. It was once believed in Hawaii that the green peridot crystals found in volcanic ashes were the tears of the volcano goddess, Hele. Also, Peridot could ward off evil spirits. When set in gold, this gem was said to protect the wearer from nightmares. It was believed that Peridot encourages positive energy and suppress ego and jealousy, and as a result of these qualities, it helps in the success of marriage.

There are five major sources of peridot.  Finest peridot comes from Burma, commercial grade comes from Arizona and New Mexico in the USA. Vietnam, China, and Pakistan have also become an important supplier of peridot.
